Irish Soda Bread aka Brown Bread
This bread is dense, it will not be light and fluffy.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (do not use self-rising as it already contains baking powder and salt)
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk or sour milk
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 oz or 1 big tbsp butter
Directions
Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 425 F. degrees.
Step 2 – In a large bowl sieve and combine all the dry ingredients.
Step 3 – Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture looks like fine crumbs
Step 4 – Make a well in the centre and add the buttermilk to form a coarse, stiff dough.
Step 5 – Place on a floured surface and lightly kneed (2-3 times). Shape into a round loaf.
Step 6 – Put on a baking sheet and lightly dust with flour. Cut a fairly deep cross on the top.
Step 7 – Bake for 25-30 minutes until it has a browned crust.
Enjoy this bread with a bowl of Irish Potato Soup.
